I walked the 117 miles of the Fife Coastal Path in 2020 and 2021, sketching along the way and also recording using photographs and notes. Over the next two years I developed these ideas into a collection of small paintings and planned a set of 12 oil paintings. During 2023 I met with the Fife Coast and Countryside Trust and we agreed that I would be their Fife Coastal Path Artist in Residence in 2023. The oil paintings were completed and I revisited parts of the path for more watercolour plain-air or on-site work. These developed into concertina sketchbooks. During the recent Pittenweem Arts Festival I sold some of my work. You will find the remaining pieces on my ‘Oil Gallery’ and ‘Watercolour Gallery’ – using the menu at the top right of this page.
As part of the residency I have launched a book of my paintings including notes and ketches from the walk titled ‘Philippa Mitchell’s Fife Coastal Path’ simply because it is the path from my point of view. The first print run has now sold out, but it is being re-printed and the Fife Coast and Countryside Trust will stock it on their website and online shop: https://fifecoastandcountrysidetrust.co.uk
I was very happy to go for a walk recently with BBC Radio Scotland’s Rachel Stewart, from the programme ‘Out of Doors’, which aired on 19th August. Please see my Instagram and Facebook posts for more information on the project.
I am looking forward to getting a copy of your book. As the proud and delighted owner of an original painting of Crail Harbour in the snow, and prints of some of your rockpool watercolours (plus ‘It’s only a Mallard’), I am a fan of your smashing artwork, which I have enjoyed for many years. Having further examples of your work and the enlightenment and enthusiasm for nature that it shares will be a further joy. All the best with your residency and your future projects.
